Fun trail, busy at times.

Locals have deemed the road and parking area a shooting range on slower days, be mindful.

Watch for snakes.

Take Me Back To Strawberry Hill

Hiking Strawberry Hill in the warm spring is an experience I cherish deeply. Nestled in the rolling hills of eastern Montana, just outside the charming cowboy town of Miles City, Strawberry Hill offers a 3.5-mile loop that is rated moderate on AllTrails. It’s a trail that combines the beauty of blooming wildflowers with the adventure of varied terrain, and it’s a place that has found a permanent spot in my heart.

The hike begins with a gentle ascent, surrounded by a sea of wildflowers that paint the hillside in vibrant colors. The scent of blooming flora fills the air, creating a sense of tranquility and excitement. As I hiked with my son, we marveled at the variety of flowers, each one a testament to the beauty of nature in full bloom.

We were about halfway through our hike when we came to a beautiful, shady spot that was just made for taking a break. We stopped for a sandwich and soaked in the peaceful surroundings, looking out at Miles City in the distance. Sitting there and sharing a meal with my son made me feel really close to him and the land. Moments like these are what make hiking so special, and create memories that we’ll treasure forever.

The second half of the Strawberry Hill trail offers a different challenge. The terrain becomes slippery and loose, so be sure to look out for cows and hooved prints as you make your way down and through the grazing land. The views are spectacular, offering glimpses of the sprawling landscape below. It’s a reminder of the rugged beauty of eastern Montana, where the land feels vast and untamed.

Miles City, the small cowboy town nearby, adds to the charm of the hike. With its rich history and warm, welcoming community, it’s a place that will always have a place in my heart. It brings a sense of nostalgia and comfort, a reminder of simpler times and the enduring spirit of the American West.

Hiking Strawberry Hill is more than just a walk through nature; it’s an adventure that combines physical challenge with moments of peace and reflection. The booming wildflowers, the shady lunch spot, the tricky descent all come together to create an unforgettable experience. Sharing it with my son makes it even more special, a journey that strengthens our bond and instills in him a love for the outdoors.

I cherish the memories of hiking Strawberry Hill in the springtime, especially the vibrant wildflowers and the peacefulness of sharing a meal with my son.
